Dedicated Vs Collocated
Reasons for Choosing a Dedicated Server Over Collocation Services
Dedicated Servers and the Collocation are the two divergent areas in the server hosting arena because of the development of the Internet server hosting market.
Collocation is thought to save the costs and is also thought to provide the similar level of the service to the many corporations and the resellers. But in fact the dedicated servers offer numerous cost and service advantages over the collocation.
In a collocation scenario, the client must budget for the hardware, rack space, bandwidth and network equipment. As such, the initial cash outlay in this setup is much higher than with a dedicated server.
In a dedicated server environment, the hosting company supplies the server, rack space, bandwidth, connection to the Internet, hardware maintenance, uninterruptible power supply and 24/7 server monitoring.
A certain level of flexibility is provided to the customer by the dedicated server. Dedicated server also maintains the hardware and can replace the hardware in case of hardware failure.
Upgrading or adding the new systems is much easier and cost-effective with the dedicated servers. It is estimated that the processing power doubles every 12 months.
Now, if you purchase the hardware yourself (collocation), then you invest in a new processor and purchase a new motherboard because new processors are usually not compatible with older motherboards.
The dedicated servers are even more advantageous when you want to quickly add the unplanned systems. You would have to buy and implement a new system, if you go for the collocation.
Your company would incur around thousands of dollars in an unbudgeted costs. Now, if you hosted in a dedicated server facility, then your costs would be only a few hundred dollars.
The ability to add web servers quickly and cost-effectively should not be underestimated. Companies must also be prepared to quickly deploy the new systems, as the Internet users are continuing to soar. So, under all these conditions, the advantages of a dedicated server cannot be ignored.
Dedicated Server has a better level of service. With the dedicated servers, you are receiving 24/7 monitoring and generator power backup. Thus, if your server goes down in the middle of the night, you know that the problem will be addressed.
On the contrary, when a collocation server goes down, it will be up to you and/or your team to get in there to fix the equipment in a timely manner or compensate someone to fix it for you.
Therefore, while collocation may appear to save costs, actually it
really doesn't. Collocation simply creates more stress and counter-productivity
that could be better spent on other projects.
