Viewing Urban Change Through A Different Lens

Urban development, demolition, and redevelopment has been a century-long pattern in Salt Lake City, Utah. As the city again ventures into a massive redevelopment project, former planning director Stephen Goldsmith wants the community to take a new look at what this change means for the city. And he's created a museum to help them do it.

No city is a stagnant place. Shifting demographics, lifestyles, and economic trends all influence the evolution of cities as they try to accommodate the desires and demands of the urban culture. Increasingly, this evolution is playing out in the downtowns of cities across the nation. One American city exemplifying this common state of flux is Salt Lake City, Utah. After years of decline, the city looks to be on the rebound. With two major mixed-use developments taking shape, the expansion of the city's light rail system, and millions of square feet of retail and residential units planned, downtown Salt Lake City is on the operating table, opened up for a surgery that is as much cosmetic as it is preventive.

More than 20 acres of the city's historic downtown core are currently under construction. Entire city blocks are being razed to the ground for complete remodeling. Having so much of the city's once-thriving and now struggling downtown under construction and off-limits has the tendency to keep people away. But what if, instead of keeping people away until the work is finished, the transformation itself was as exciting and celebrated as the ribbon-cutting day?

This is the question posed by Salt Lake City's former planning director Stephen Goldsmith. And he thinks making that "what if" into reality just requires a bit of a paradigm shift.

Boeing Buys Breathing Room, Delays 787 Dreamliner Six Months

Not surprisingly, Boeing Wednesday announced a six-month delay in shipments of the 787 Dreamliner, blaming primarily out-of-sequence work caused by parts shortages in the first airplane's production.

"While we made some progress on early production planes and improving parts of availability, the pace (of improvements) has not been sufficient," Boeing CEO Jim McNerney said in a conference call this afternoon. He was alluding to problems that had already been raised in a Sept. 5 announcement where the first 787 flight was being pushed back from late summer to between mid-November and mid-December. Now the first flight is slated for the end of the first quarter at which time airplane one will fly shortly followed by airplane two assuming no more major problems arise.

McNerney said none of the problems causing the delay – shortages of smart parts and assemblies, maturing of avionics software code and building planes in the correct sequence – are related to the plane's design or engineering. "We remain confident about the design of the 787 and the fundamental (technologies) that underpin it."

Clearly, Boeing is buying breathing room. The last delay left no "margin" for slippages and given the rigidity of that schedule, Boeing was willing to take a hit today and announce a major delay instead of the two small ones that preceded today's announcement. The margin promises to give Boeing time to fix problems found in flight testing without causing more schedule slippages.

Also, 787 Chief Project Engineer Tom Cogan did not sound optimistic that the schedule made public on Sept. 5 would stick when he was awarded DN Engineer of the Year two weeks ago at National Manufacturing Week.

While airplane one "came off its jacks last Sunday," the acceleration in the production schedule announced Sept. 5 was not sufficient, according to President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes Scott Carson. He said work on airplane two is progressing and that once airplane one is complete, production on subsequent airplanes will accelerate. Work has begun up through airplane 10, according to Carson.

Boeing is largely sticking to its original forecast that more than 100 planes will be built by the end of 2009 – 109 to be precise, three less than planned. Orders stand at 710 for 50 customers. McNerney estimated about 15 customers will be affected by the delays.

As for the software coding problems, Carson welcomed the time to allow for more testing and software.

"On the issue of systems coding and integration, we have made some but not all of the milestones, (but) this activity is no longer pacing as the critical path item. The software will be more mature, reducing chances of issues coming up during flight test. We expect to have it fully loaded in next several weeks. The final (software) was loaded (into simulators) in September and is working well," Carson said.

Inside The Museum Without Walls

In this podcast we talk with former Salt Lake City Planning Director Stephen Goldsmith, and now the creator and curator of the Temporary Museum of Permanent Change, a conceptual planning project that aims to change the way people think about urban development. Stephen talks about what the museum is and how it fits in to the changing downtown of Salt Lake City.

By increasing awareness that the developing downtown is not closed for business and emphasizing the different ways cities change over time, the goal of the Temporary Museum of Permanent Change is to reconnect the community to its surroundings.

Goldsmith calls it "a way to change the way people feel about their city. Their city is archaeology, their city is commerce, their city is a ballet, as Jane Jacobs used to say. Their city is all these things, and because you're labeling it 'museum', it changes the way people think just by changing the name."

Tech deal news lifts US stocks

US stocks rose on Friday, driven by a takeover bid in the software sector, data showing strength in consumer spending and a brighter outlook from McDonald's Corp.

The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced more than 1 per cent and reversed the previous session's late-day slide, boosted by shares of BEA Systems Inc after Oracle Corp made a $US6.7 billion offer for the business software maker.

Retail sales rose more than expected last month, the Commerce Department said, despite worries the housing slump would cause consumers to keep a tight grip on their wallets.

Investors "were encouraged by the increase in retail sales," said Todd Clark, managing director of stock trading at Nollenberger Capital Partners, in San Francisco. "The market has been paying a lot of attention to the consumer."

McDonald's forecast third-quarter earnings above the average Wall Street estimate on strength in Asia. Shares of McDonald's, a Dow component and the world's largest restaurant company, rose 1.4 per cent to $US57.02.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 77.96 points, or 0.56 per cent, to end at 14,093.08. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 7.39 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 1,561.80. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 33.48 points, or 1.21 per cent, to 2,805.68.

For the week, the Dow gained 0.2 per cent, the S& P 500 rose 0.3 per cent and the Nasdaq advanced 0.9 per cent.

Choosing the Right Kind of Web Hosting

In the first part of this article, I gave a brief introduction to finding the right web host to fit the individual needs of your web site. In this second part, I want to get more specific about the types of hosting currently available. There is a wide range of hosting options available to those people looking to put their web site online, but I will stick to the main hosting options. I will take a closer look at free and budget hosting options, virtual private server (VPS) hosting, dedicated hosting, and colocation hosting.

There are a variety of other hosting options available, but I will focus on the ones listed above. Some examples of other web hosting options available to you are reseller hosting, PHP hosting, and enterprise hosting. Many of the other types of web hosting are just a slight variation of the hosting options that I will focus on in this article. So although there may be a lot of different names for various types of web hosts, they all boil down to the basic types that I will discuss.

Web hosting varies greatly in price. Web hosting can cost be free in some cases, but the web host will often place ads on your web page. Free web hosting is also very limited in terms of features, bandwidth, and server uptime. Free web hosting is a good choice for personal web pages with very little traffic. The most expensive type of hosting is colocation hosting where you actually own a server, or make payments on it, which can cost over $1,000 per month. So as you can see, the cost of web hosting varies greatly.

Shared Hosting
Shared hosting is what about 90 percent of websites on the Internet use as their hosting choice. The reason for this is the low cost of shared hosting. Some web hosts offer shared hosting plans for as little as $2 per month, although most are around $10 per month. Shared hosting plans are probably the best value when it comes to web hosting, because you typically get a nice chunk of bandwidth, control over your website, a good amount of storage, and plenty of email addresses. For most small websites, shared hosting is the best value in terms of price and performance. The shared hosting market is so competitive among web hosts that they are constantly offering new freebies and other incentives for you to choose their company over the competition.

Some of the top shared web hosting companies will offer a 99.9 percent server uptime guarantee, 24/7 customer support, 10 GB or more of bandwidth, multiple sub-domain capabilities, and ample website disk space. If you find a shared web hosting company with numbers similar to the ones listed above, they may be a good fit for your small-to-medium sized website; do make sure, though, that they are a trusted company with good user reviews before going with them.

Is Your Website Design Annoying?

Well…. It's not that hard to be annoying. However, some webmasters are much better than others at annoying their visitors. Check my top 5 list and decide for yourself whether you have been annoying your visitors.

1) Background music – Unless you are operating an online internet radio station or sell music CDs, why play a midi/wav file in the background continuously on every page?
2) Huge font size – If you are designing a website for people with a disability then you are doing the right thing, but if not then you are shouting. People don't like it when someone shouts at them.
3) Small font size – Do you want to be heard? Keep a normal tone, don't shout but "speak" in a reasonable volume.
4) Overlapping layers – Layers can be very useful up to the point. But not when they are being used to put an annoying message in the visitor's face. Don't try to force your visitor to read your messages. Try persuasion instead of brute force.
5) Popup windows – Even though popup windows are now blocked by many add on tools, webmasters keep using them. The annoying part of popups is sometimes we actually miss important information because of those anti popup tools. Haven't you heard the old phrase "if you can't beat him, join him"? Don't use pop up windows. Put your important messages in a central place on your website.
