We found that the younger group of users were far less likely to dispense overt blame for any difficulties encountered - with only one user from this group conveying blame (to themselves).

Poignant reaction

We also found that older users used far more emotive words and phrases when conveying to websites than younger users. All of the older users engaged strongly positive or negative words in their explanations, such as 'love', 'hate', 'stupid', 'helpful' and 'friendly'. Indeed, one partaker even talked to the website as if it were a pet ('That's a good boy')!

In distinction, only two of the younger participants uttered themselves in corresponding strong terms (both when talking negatively about aspects of a site).

It was also the case that all older users reported preferring websites that changed the colour of their visited links, whereas only five of the younger participants considered the matter significant.

Preference for 'big and simple' design
Seven of our older applicants reported anything less than 12-point type as being too small to read contentedly - and even though all users agreed that being able to re-size the text on the screen would be a bettet idea, only one of them knew how to do so through the browser. It was also the case that all older applicants preferred 800x600 over 1024x768 resolution.

Our suggestions

1.Although more research into the internet behaviors and predilections of older users is obviously necessary, we would like to propose the following:
2. Designers should explore pioneering ways to converse the fact that a web page had not finished and needs scrolling
3. Technological terms should be avoided if possible - and where they have to be used, a clear elucidation must be easily accessible (including examples wherever appropriate)
4. Links should be identified in a dependable and obvious way ( e.g. blue, bold, underline, red on mouse-over)
5. The mesmerizing features on a web page (e.g. headings, pictures, icons, instructions and bullets) should be links
6. Visited links should change color
7. Provide an HTML-version of as much text as possible and do not require users to install software (even Adobe Acrobat) in order to be able to admittance information
8. Make content as succinct and clear as possible - consider offering two versions of the same content ('simple' and 'detailed') and allow users to choose which they want to access
9. Websites should offer a 'Make the writing bigger' link with supplementary illustrations/icons and always use high difference to display content e.g. black text on an off-white background (N.B. using an off-white background is inclinated to white because it reduces the chances of eyestrain for people who are slow readers)
10. Provide overt instructions by using the vital forms of verbs ( e.g. 'Go to more details on…', 'Find a…', etc.)

Conclusions

Elder users are an spectators group that will grow in size and significance over the next few years. Our studies specify that there are lots of simple things we can do to support their use of the internet.

We believe that these suggestions should be considered by all websites, and efforts should be made to further inflate our knowledge of how to design for these users.
