Web-based
software program helps predict survivability for some cancer
patients
Oregon Health & Science University Cancer Institute researchers
have developed a Web based software program that can help head
and neck cancer patients better predict their survivability.
This new tool can help us make personalized predictions of conditional
survival for an individual patient depending on his or her specific
situation.The new Web-browser software tool called the regression
model can calculate a patient'sconditional survival based on
the patient's age, gender,race,tumor site, stage and aggressiveness. |

Eclipse releases annual development tool updates
The Eclipse Foundation on june 27 begins the annual coordinated
release of new versions of its 21 open-source projects. The
updates include new runtime technology for creating server applications
and tools for improving collaboration,according to the foundation.The
release, which Eclipse calls Europa,includes 17 million lines
of code and contributions from more than 310 open-source developers
in 19 countries
Features in the Europa release include the following: Eclipse
Equinox (an implementation of the OSGi 4 framework), which Eclipse
says can ease development of server applications running on
Equinox runtime. Advanced reporting functionality for Java applications
in the Eclipse Business Intelligence and Reporting Tool. The
first technology to come from the Eclipse SOA Tools Project.
Collaboration features that support task-centric collaboration
for development teams in Eclipse Mylyn. New IDE support for
Ruby development in the Eclipse Dynamic Language Toolkit |

New tool for testing application security
Veracode Inc launched a new software security rating service,introducing
a new system for testing the security of both internal corporate
application development efforts and those of third-party software
makers. With the debut of the service, Burlington,Mass based
Veracode claims to have unveiled the world's first standards-based
system for rating the overall security of software programs
before they are put into production mode. |

Apple web application lets you track iPhone availability
The company has developed a small web application that will
let customers check up on availability of the device at its
164 national retail stores.The Apple retail availability tracker
allows iPhone seekers to select their state of residence and
will then display a list of Apple retail stores with iPhone
availability indicators. A green dot next your local Apple store
means iPhones are in stock while a red dot will indicate a sell-out."

BBC
web downloads set to launch
The BBC's on demand TV service,the BBC iPlayer will
launch to the public on 27 July the corporation has revealed.UK
users will be able to download popular shows over the net seven
days after broadcast to watch on their PC. Later this year,
the service will also be available via links from YouTube and
could also appear on other websites such as MSN, Bebo, and Facebook.
At launch the application will only work on Windows PCs but
a version for the Mac could be available by autumn." |

Security to Host Closed-Door Security Forum
The U.S Department of Homeland security will host a
invite only conference two months from now that will bring together
security experts from law enforcement, Internet service providers
and the technology industry.
The Internet Security Operations and Intelligence (ISOI) workshop
will be held on August 27 and 28 at the Academy for Educational
Development in Washington D.C. It is expected to draw about
240 participants who will engage in a frank discussion of the
latest trends in cybercrime, said Gadi Evron, a security evangelist
