The Best Art VideosOn The Web
Impressionist and Modern Masters from the Cleveland Museum
of Art, one of several CMA traveling exhibition series, drew
more than 522,000 visitors in Asia with venues in Seoul, Tokyo
and Beijing and attracted more than 200,000 during its stop
in Vancouver, British Columbia. This exhibition, making a
stop in Cleveland this fall, covers a century of art making
from 1864 to 1964 and showcases important works by the major
Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, early modern sculptors
and avant-garde artists interested in Dadaism, Cubism and
Surrealism.
We are excited to welcome the return of some the Museum's
most treasured and cherished works of art," Timothy Rub, CMA
director, said. "Many of our visitors will be pleased to know
they can see some of their old friends back on temporary display
at the Museum. It has been quite some time since these works
of art have graced our walls, as this collection has been
making its way around the globe delighting thousands who would
not have the opportunity to travel to Cleveland. And it will
only be a short period of time before we welcome these works
back to a bigger and better Cleveland Museum of Art." |

Discovering the Web's Edge
Where are the greatest opportunities, and the greatest risks?
At the Web's edge—the places where the Web is just beginning
to take root: the industries, geographies, and applications
that have yet to be conquered by the Web's wide reach.
For the past three years, the Web 2.0 Summit has explored
ideas which have already begun to slip into the mainstream.
This year, we'll highlight news from unusual suspects—the
enthusiasts and dreamers touching the edges of spaces not
yet conquered by the Web, as well as established players who
are looking to expand into new and previously unimaginable
realms.
How is the Web infiltrating new beachheads in areas we never
thought it could—or would? What are the majors doing at the
edge, at the loony "twenty percent time" at Google, in the
labs at MSN, IBM, etc., that might inform entirely new applications,
opportunities, even threats? What are the edge startups promising
to redefine the center? What are the things we wish or know
the Web can do, but so far, is failing us? What are the edges
in terms of policy, politics, and morality |

Ecomerchant
appoints Tinderhouse for new accessible e-commerce website
Tinderhouse has been appointed to create a new website and online
store for Ecomerchant – the UK's leading environmental builder's
merchant. One in seven people in the UK have some form of disability,
and are not able to access many e-commerce websites. As well
as being bad for business, websites that are not accessible
may well fall foul of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
This requires businesses to make their products and services,
including websites, accessible to people with disabilities.
Whitstable-based Tinderhouse specialises in designing and developing
accessible websites for organisations ranging from small- and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to large listed companies.
Tinderhouse creative director Nick Tatt said "We're delighted
Ecomerchant has decided to work with us on this project. Their
decision backs up our belief that accessibility is the only
way forward for e-commerce websites." Ecomerchant manager Paul
Whitlock said "We chose Tinderhouse because we were impressed
with their track record of producing high quality websites.
We're looking forward to relaunching our site and reaching an
even wider customer base." |

The
importance of trust in the eCommerce segment
Most online consumers are understandably hesitant and tend to
wonder whether or not to make a specific purchase from an unfamiliar
eCommerce merchant. In many cases, and even if this anxiety
isn't fairly justified, the net effect on eTailers is just the
same and tends to be very detrimental to their business. On
average, online shopper anxiety creates a more complicated challenge
for Web merchants, especially the ones without national or well-known
trusted brands.
This phenomenon is simply a lack of consumer confidence that
some define as the "risk discount," which states that buyers
who perceive greater risk when making an online purchase will
naturally discount the price they are willing to pay. Shoppers
simply perceive risk in an online transaction since they usually
have a very limited knowledge of the seller's ability and willingness
to deliver the goods or the service they acquired. Simply put,
shoppers don't know as much about online merchants as they need
to know in order to feel completely safe about the transaction.
Most eCommerce site owners and managers will take some steps
to represent themselves in a reliable and trustworthy fashion.
But prominent media attention has been focused on the scams
of a few fraudulent or financially distressed merchants. Such
wide-spread media coverage fuels the perception of online risk
that some shoppers have. Fundamentally, an eCommerce merchant
must reduce or, in a perfect world, eliminate this perception
of risk before, during and after the shopping experience. In
an online environment, addressing uncertainty at every step
of the buying process is extremely critical in distinguishing
trustworthy and reliable merchants.
While data security is always a threat, mediocre merchant performance
consistently and overwhelmingly represents the greatest risk
to online shoppers. As a matter of fact, the National Consumer
League's Top 10 Internet Scam Trends for last year reported
that merchant non-performance -- more specifically, non-delivery
or misrepresentation of goods -- made up two thirds of all reported
Internet scams. |

Serious security vulnerability in BIND 9 DNS server
Various Internet security firms warn that a serious vulnerability
in BIND 9, the software widely used in the Web's DNS addressing
system. Most users of this popular software, which include ISPs
and large Web hosting providers, are being cautioned to repair
the security holes in this software immediately, in order to
prevent end users from being victimized by pharming attacks,
when they are directed to a website set up by cyber criminals.
When an Internet user types a Web address into a browser, the
request goes to a DNS server, which finds the corresponding
numerical IP address and locates the specific Web site that
was requested.
For inherent security reasons, when a browser queries a DNS
server, a random 16-bit transactional ID is used to verify the
response from the server. But according to Amit Klein, CTO (chief
technology officer) at security vendor Trusteer Ltd., the transaction
ID isn't random at all and very easy to predict by a would-be
attacker. The vulnerability in BIND 9 could allow a potential
hacker to force the DNS server to return an incorrect website
to a user, a deceptive method known as DNS cache poisoning,
commonly referred to as pharming.
Klein added that the problem exists in all BIND 9 releases when
the software is being used in a caching server configuration.
Other security observers also confirmed the problem. Johannes
Ullrich, chief technical officer of the SANS Internet Storm
Center wrote "this is very much a feasible attack. It is best
to patch and secure your BIND server as soon as conveniently
possible." |

Yahoo
surpasses Google in customer satisfaction
Yahoo has now surpassed Google in overall customer satisfaction
for the first time, according to the University of Michigan,
which did some research on the major search engines in use today,
as well as Internet news portals as part of its ACSI (American
Customer Satisfaction Index). For most industry observers, Yahoo's
rise to the top spot was unexpected, since it comes at a time
when many on Wall Street wonder what's next for the company's
future.
Yahoo's new CEO and original co-founder Jerry Yang has said
he's looking to unveil a new strategy for the company in the
coming months, and investors have avoided the stock after Yahoo's
latest disappointing earnings results. On average, Yahoo's overall
customer satisfaction score rose almost 4 percent from 2006,
while Google's rating fell close to 4 percent. Looking at the
other top search engines, Microsoft's MSN got a slight increase
in its user satisfaction score, while IAC-owned Ask.com saw
its user satisfaction score increase by an unexpected 5.9 percent.
AOL, the search engine and portal owned by Time Warner, saw
its user satisfaction drop over 9.44 percent from 2006.
The decline can be attributed to some marketplace confusion
as AOL transforms from more of a subscriber-based ISP (Internet
Service Provider) to a site where its content is free and supported
by a lot of advertising. The good news is the problems that
AOL is having are less about the site's capabilities and more
about customer service during the site's transformation. Some
industry observers think that once that is behind them, AOL
will be ready to compete more effectively. |
